How to clean car wheels and tires

≈ 30 min

Short answer

Clean the wheels first, while they're cool. Spray Tire&Wheel Cleaner on the tires and wheels, agitate with brushes after 3–4 minutes and rinse with pressurised water. IronOFF dissolves orange brake dust specks. Apply BlackStar dressing to clean, dry rubber with the TireTouch brush.

Step by step

  1. Wheels must be cool

On a hot wheel after a drive the product dries and can leave spots.

  2. Knock off heavy dirt

If there are lumps of mud on the wheels and in the arches, blast them off with water first.

  3. Spray Tire&Wheel Cleaner

Spray it undiluted on the tires and wheels and wait 3–4 minutes without letting it dry. It draws old grime, brake dust, tar and old dressing out of the rubber.

  4. Brush and rinse

The stiff Tire Brush for the rubber, the soft Wheel Brush for the wheel face, the Rim Brush L for the spokes and inner barrel. Then rinse with pressurised water.

  5. Remove orange specks with IronOFF

If embedded brake dust remains on the wheels, spray IronOFF: the indicator turns purple wherever there's metal. Rinse off after a few minutes.

  6. Dress the tires

Once the rubber is dry, put BlackStar on the TireTouch brush and work it into the tire clockwise and anticlockwise. Let it dry — the rubber turns deep black and scuffs disappear.

Common mistakes

  • Cleaning hot wheels
  • Acid cleaners on polished, chrome or anodized wheels
  • Using the same mitt for wheels and paint
  • Applying dressing to wet or dirty rubber

Questions and answers

What are the orange spots on my wheels and paint?

Metal particles from brakes and the road that oxidize. An indicator cleaner such as IronOFF dissolves them — the spots turn purple and rinse away.

How is Tire&Wheel Cleaner different from IronOFF?

Tire&Wheel Cleaner is the everyday product for every wash: it removes road grime from tires and wheels. IronOFF is for when brake dust has bonded to the wheels and a normal wash won't shift it.

How often should I dress my tires?

After every wheel wash or whenever the rubber turns grey again. Clean the rubber first: a new coat won't hold well on old dressing and dirt.
